About Flag
Design and Symbolism
The flag has vertical triband of green, white and red with the National Coat of Arms superimposed on the white band. Red, white, and green are the colors of the national liberation army in Mexico. The coat of arms in the white band is the badge of Mexico City. This emblem is based on the Aztec symbol for Tenochtitlan. The main featurer of this emblem is an eagle, holding a serpent in its talon, is perched on top of a prickly pear cactus; the cactus is situated on a rock that rises above a lake. The green band stands for independence, white for chastity and purity of religion and red refers to blood union of local ethnic groups (the blood of Spanish, Indian and bi-racial). The flag is similar to the national flag of Italy except the emblem.
