Design and Symbolism
The flag consists of nine alternating white and blue horizontal bands with a white canton charged with the Sun of May with sixteen rays - eight straight and eight wavy. The nine bands represents the nine departments of the country. The Sun of May symbolizes a new independent nation in the world. The design of the flag is probably influenced by the style of American and Argentine flag.
