About Flag
Design and Symbolism
The flag is made up of three horizontal bands, the upper red band, the middle white band and the lower blue band of equal size. The color scheme of the flag has a very specific meaning assigned to each color. Red is said to remember the bravery, patriotism, bloodshed and sacrifice of those who fought for independence of the country. White stands for the trustworthiness of the citizens of Paraguay as well as the peace that the country wishes to maintain. Finally, the blue represents the freedom that the country achieved as well as the generosity of its people. The obverse side consists of a yellow five-pointed star surrounded by a ring of palm and olive branches. This image is surrounded by three increasingly larger circles and the words “Republica del Paraguay” which means “Republic of Paraguay”. The reverse side is the coat of arms, which is a sitting lion with the words “Paz y Justicia” which means “Peace and Justice”. The lion is also surrounded by three increasingly larger circles. The flag is similar to the French and Dutch flag.
