The current flag is very similar to the former flag of Libya, which also bears traditional pan-Arab colors to commemorate solidarity towards the other Arab nations. These four colors have been historically linked to the Arab people and Islamic religion. The green equilateral triangle at the hoist side represents Islam, prosperity and also agricultural tradition of the country.  The red strip at the top symbolizes the Sudan's people struggle for independence and for development of the state, it also represents the blood of martyrs. The white strip in the middle represents peace, brightness, optimism and love, it also represents the White Flag League which was a nationalist group that rose up against colonial rule in 1924 and lastly the black strip signifies Sudan itself; in Arabic Sudan means black. It also represents the black flag of nationalists who fought colonial rule during the Mahdist Revolution, late in 19th century.
